Year Level Religion Focus

Scope and Sequence​​​​


Prep

Term 1

​Prep will know that the bible is a special book and recognise some symbols​ and rituals of prayer, including making the Sign of the Cross. The children begin to make connections between the stories of Jesus' death and resurrection and the celebration of Easter today.

 ​

Term 2

Prep will learn about God's special relationship with all of creation and make connections to their ​own lives and how they can care for God's creations.​

 

Term 3

Prep will begin to learn the many ways people pray.  They listen to stories Jesus would have learnt as a boy, about God's love and special people in the Bible. 

 

Term 4

Prep will learn of stories in the Gospels about Jesus life, and make connections to our Christmas Celebrations and the stories of the Birth of Jesus.   

 
 

Year 1

Term 1

Year 1 link the sacred spaces of the classroom and the church, the symbols used and why they are meaningful.  They make connections with symbols and rituals and how these are connected to sacraments and celebrations within the community. 

 

Term 2

Year 1 learn God has a special relationship with all of creation.  They learn we live according to God’s plan treating each other with dignity.  They learn that to know God we spend time in prayer.

 

Term 3

Year 1 learn we shine our light when we care for others as Jesus taught us to do.

 

Term 4

Year 1 learn Mary is a significant person in the Catholic tradition and we have certain ways of honouring her including praying the Hail Mary.

 
 

Year 2

Term 1

Year 2 learn the world and all creation is a gift from God and as a co-creator they need to look after all creation.

 

Term 2

Year 2 learn God’s relationship with the Jewish people showed love and forgiveness.  They learn Jesus showed this love in healing and forgiving and that forgiveness is part of the Sacrament of Penance.

 

Term 3

Year 2 learn the Bible is a library of books and that tell us about the life and times of Jesus.  They learn about the actions of Jesus and learn how to follow them today and that our local parish helps us to do this.

 

Term 4

Year 2 learn the Bible and Sacred Writings tell us about forgiveness.  They learn about, and pray prayers of forgiveness.  ​


 
 

Year 3

Term 1

Year 3 learn how to develop an Image of God and an understanding of Jesus as the Messiah by drawing on stories from the Gospels and their different text types (narrative stories, parables and miracles).


Term 2

Year 3 learn to make connections between their own lives and that of their community with the important people from the Old Testament, the wisdom of saints and Jesus' teachings. They also read and create prayers of thanksgiving and praise.


Term 3

Year 3 explore the life, teachings and mission of Jesus that help us as believers to live out the greatest commandment of Jesus – Love one another as I have loved you.


Term 4

Year 3 learn how the Sacraments of Initiation welcome us into the Parish community as well as how the local diocese, parish and its people keep alive the ways to live out Jesus' greatest commandment.


 
 

​Year 4

Term 1

Year 4 learn there are many prayers Christian communities use to pray.  They learn each one has a different purpose.  They learn about the beginnings of the early Catholic church in Australia and the people involved.

 

Term 2

Year 4 learn to use various Bible Tools to access the Bible. They develop an understanding of God’s word in scripture and learn how to interpret scripture using Worlds of the Text.

 

Term 3

Year 4 learn that there are avenues provided by the church to action Forgiveness. They learn about Stewardship of Creation.

 

Term 4

Year 4 learn to make connections between early Christian communities and the class community. This helps them to establish the Christian principles of living in community.​

 

 
 

Year 5

Term 1

Year 5 learn faith is shared and strengthened in a community of believers. They make connections with what this would look like in a Jewish community.  They develop an understanding of Mary’s role in the Catholic church community.

 

Term 2

Year 5 learn about the Holy Spirit, the Sacrament of Confirmation and the gifts of the Holy Spirit that help us with formation and decision making. ​


Term 3

Year 5 learn about the colonial church in Australia and how it sustained the development of faith in Australia. They explore and research the contributions of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop and other pioneering Catholics.


Term 4

Year 5 learn to compare the Gospels of Luke and Mark to discover the different ways the writer has shaped the writing to influence the audience. They investigate psalms to discover the different types and they develop increasing control over Bible Tools.


 
 

Year 6

Term 1

Year 6 learn about Christian leadership in a Catholic School. Year​ 6 study The Lord’s Prayer, The Gospel Writers, The Virtue of Faith and Jesus’ New Law.


Term 2

Year 6 develop an understanding of the Spiritual & Corporal Works of Mercy which consider the spiritual, material and physical needs of others. Students will participate in Mediative Prayer experiences and explore the contribution of Australian Catholics and Catholic Organisations since 1900 to shaping Australia.

Term 3

Year 6 study Jesus’ relationship with God, further their understanding of Liturgical Celebrations in the Catholic Church and Communion of Saints.

 

Term 4

Year 6 study key messages of the Old Testament Prophets, using biblical tools and the faith of Jewish believers.
